result of a broken unfit political system. It's inevitable. Blaming an entire swathe of voters without understanding why they abstained or voted against the Dems is to continue along the same blinkered path.

Again not supporting the system, but abstaining is being willing to accept the outcome of others who are willing to vote. This is the most important reason to vote. That each of us has an impact and small numbers can become big. I am not a US citizen.
No, abstaining is an important and active choice and a lack of willingness doesn't come into it; it's saying "I am not voting for either of these parties because they are morally bankrupt imo". Here, we can spoil our vote. It's a decision, not an absence of one.
The tragedy is that politicians do not take abstentions seriously; they aren't engaging with the numbers. Again, that's the fault of the system, not the people who exercise their democratic right to abstain/spoil vote
