I can't even think of how many 10-to-20-page papers I wrote in my _undergrad_ schooling — or essays of 10 pgs or more in high school. I think I had to write a paper about Pompeii, with library citations, in 2d grade.

The idea of getting to grad school w/ little writing experience blows my mind.
Soon, we are going to face serious challenges to book-length dissertation norms beyond our insider baseball of "what purpose does the PhD thesis serve?"

Many contemporary grad students have only written 1-3 long papers in their entire schooling. Then we blame them for struggling. Unsustainable!
