On the other hand, it's too good! It takes too much skill out of the flying! Players shouldn't "fly for the camera". This whole topic is precisely the issue SC's flight model had/has lol. It's too good, we had to resort to inventing lore that allowed us to nerf thrusters in atmosphere to get it to look okay. And even then it wasn't the best.

I can actually point to the specific thread that kickstarted this. It was about people complaining about giant capital ships being able to to hover nose down 1km above the surface and shoot stuff on the ground.

The physics of everything in the game dictate this SHOULD be possible, but everybody complains that it looks bad and isn't immersive and is a critical issue that needs to be fixed.

This reminds me of the flight model from Flight of Nova. It has two modes and playing it at first you look clumsy and stupid trying to land and fly but after a couple hours you're like the millennium falcon taking off from Bespin.

Yeah, Flight of Nova did it really well! It has an even more difficult problem to solve as well, because it covers a range of accelerations and speeds from takeoff all the way to orbital velocities. The way that the thrust scales up gradually in that game is both elegant and brilliant.

I've thought about this ever since I was a kid trying to figure out how to make a seamless game of that scale work, because like e.g. flying from Yavin's surface to the Death Star was completely in normal space despite the vast distance. I never really came up with any great answers!

You can compress time, compress space or compress speeds. On Elite we dynamically altered the acceleration and speeds based on how far away you were from stuff in space, with the effective outcome of making those vast realistic distances much more compressed in terms of time to cross.

Aside from some very brief experiments, I've always wondered if you could get away with faking the distance through rendering/perspective tricks. I.e. make a Freelancer sized system, but then scaling celestial objects as you get nearer/further to make it look like you're traveling greater distances.
