(Personally I'm able to rationalise it since I don't know how much family he has back in Russia but I can understand that if he does he wouldn't wanna put them in harm's way. He could also genuinely be a Putin support but plausible deniability and whatnot)
the "he has family there" thing does not hold up because he has enough money to have moved everyone he knows here after 2014. he's fully onboard the war crime train.
Maybe his family doesn't want to move? Maybe they have reasons why they need to stay? Feels very flippant to insist he move his whole family out of their home country
He's the most high profile Russian player, and he stays in Putin's good graces, does propaganda hits with the nat team (including as captain), otherwise low profile on politics and anything but hockey
I was a young white dude and I am upset with Bonds breaking the records (and McGwire) because they had longer seasons. Later, I was also upset because of steroids.
I was actually against Gretzky’s record being broken (cause he had like completely GOAT numbers), but was reminded he’s an asshole.
As a hockey fan from Arizona, I was saying "Fuck Wayne Gretzky" before he revealed himself as a fascist.
As for Ovie, I could totally see a world where he had to be buddies with Putin or else. So I'll give him a tiny bit of slack while Gretzky gets none because he made a choice to betray Canada.
I never thought anyone would get near 894, given the state of goal scoring in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Now that it's happened, and given the individuals involved and state of affairs in, of all places, Washington, I can't say I felt anything more than golf clap
