would i risk my visa to be able to spend time helping and taking care of her? and i only have one close family member like that, nevermind people who had to leave behind children and other loved ones to work in the UK

the thing is, all that settled status gets you is more freedom with where you spend your time! it doesn't take care of the money or job issues or anything involved in needing to take care of loved ones elsewhere
also: since a 2012 law, it has been effectively impossible to bring a parent into the UK. even with settled status. even with citizenship. https://freemovement.org.uk/out-with-the-old/
so, if something happens to my mom, the only way i can be with and help her is to leave the UK. this is a lot of pressure on your immigration status! (and your heart, even when you have fully chosen this path...)
it seems clear that many, many, many issues with migration could be better addressed with the barest minimum of empathy. and yet, "center left" parties on both sides of the atlantic instead prefer to capitulate to fear mongering BS instead of meeting anyone's actual material and social needs.
it appears that the extended wait does not apply to spouses, but people on work visas (though the internet is doing lots of sleuthing today, so people could be interpreting it incorrectly!), so it (maybe? probably?) doesn't apply to me.

it's all such a terrible mess.
