The difference in weight of different sides from the number engraving is negligible to the results. We're talking it probably affects the odds at the thousandth or hundred of thousandth of a %
I wonder if anyone has done a connection between dice that are poorly manufactured https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HhFz7fsFKk and actual roll outcomes. That confirm or refute the probability of your comment!
My gut feeling is there's no way to do it without being painfully obvious. I've had people "soft roll" D6 dice after I rolled low in hopes it landed on the opposite side and called them out for it.
Just like sex, it's best to give a few rigorous shakes before throwing the dice
The only thing I do with spindowns is hide them in odd places at my friend’s house. I’ve probably put close to 100 in the cupboards, utensil drawer, tool drawers, bathroom, seat cushions, taped behind his TV, behind pictures, between bottles of alcohol, etc. He’s getting a little pissed. 🤣
I think the idea was to roll it "sideways" to land on the higher side of the dice, but I don't know about anyone proving it or being able to do it consistently
This is an old craps cheating technique called helicoptering. You would throw the side sideways so they would spin instead of roll. This is a lot easier to do with d6s that have big flat sides to slide on.
If you’re doing relatively soft rolls then you should be able to consistently hit the higher side of the die without too much trouble, though not specifically 20, if you’re just fucking letting it rip it should be fine
The concern isn't consistency of landing a value as much as consistency of landing on a given side. All of the top values are concentrated on 1/3rd of the die. On a normal die the 20 is right next to the 2 so even if you could increase your chances of landing on that side it cancels out on average.
I admit I don't think I've ever seen anyone pull this cheat off but I do think that might be in part due to the effort players go to to not allow it and therefore preemptively discourage people from learning or trying to learn it.
It’s difficult but if you give it a rotation that has the 20 at the top you can bias a d20 to higher rolls. You can also do the inverse. That said, I 10,000% agree with your core thought which is spin downs are fine.
Maybe, but i doubt you could do it in a way that isn't obvious. In any setting where it truly matters, I wouldn't use spindowns to track life so I can just pull out any other die

Took my 5% to look really cool, rolled a 20, no one rolled spindowns for first in my group ever again 😂
With a D20 that will give you a balanced spread, still cheating, but the average number will tend towards 11.
With a spindown, that same area will tend to a much higher number.
