I was wondering about that, it's years since I've seen one BUT it was very definitely feeding on the lavender and according to wikipedia warble flies don't have mouth parts, they just carry eggs.
Thank you! It did look rather like a humming bird, but I was surprised to see a moth active during the day. It's gone now - it didn't land at any point so I could get a better look at it.
Yes, they're out and about in daylight. The only year I've had them in my garden they were on verbena bonariensis, so were high enough up to get a really good look at.
