I have access to AI at work too but not mandated. It does help a bit when it comes to quickly learning something you didn't try before, but I'm with you on the skills side. I don't know how much I'll retain, or just going forward with heavy reliance on AI and no longer thinking myself.

It’s been helpful to do tasks I don’t enjoy like quickly spinning up the infrastructure for tests. I know how, I just find it tedious. But I’m not great at Typescript generics so I use AI to help me there too. I’ve made no progress in sharpening skills there but the PRs go up faster 😬

Ya I feel that. I worry about how unproductive I feel when I am offline trying to code …

But there is a whole new layer of skills getting developed that feels really powerful. It’s hard to deny.

I hope that eventually we get our own AIs that run local and are open source.

It certainly can help one to get unstuck and keep momentum going towards solving a bigger problem. It can be a really powerful tool. But how often we use that tool, and why, starts to feel like more of a crutch perhaps
