It’s very easy to feel sorry for the innocent. Our charge is to protect the basic humanity—no more than that, but that much—of even those who have denied it to others. If we can’t, we move one rung down the ladder toward them. And equally importantly: plenty of Death Row inmates *aren’t guilty*.
