My journey to diagnosis had a very brief span: " the psychiatrist won't see you because he doesn't believe you would benefit, at your age, from treatment". The booby prize was a short course with a "therapist" who suggested I use 'smart' goals and put one day aside a week for housework 🤣

I only heard an overview but it sounded like the psychiatrist was saying the middle class are being overdiagnoses as they can afford to get appointments

I read the article that summarised the podcast, and it was so weird and equivocal. Like, no evidence of overdiagnosis, and also acknowledging the likelihood of underdiagnosis. So. Why. The. Article. At. All.

Underdiagnosis and overdiagnosis happens at the same time (in different pop. groups) for just about all conditions, reflecting inequities in the health system and social determinants of health. Sounds like the guy needs to brush up on his public health literature.

We were fortunate to get an autism diagnosis early for our little guy. That enabled us to access support that's been important to his development and happiness. Sadly there are several neuro divergent kids at his ECE on long waiting lists for diagnosis.

Yep, was told that I wasn’t high priority(ie must be doing ok cos I’m not in court or jail). Fortunately I could afford to be seen privately. There was a lot of hoops to jump thru and some really difficult times to get there. I feel for those who can’t afford to go private.
