Fascinating article.

An extractive rent-seeking focus is holding Aotearoa back.

The dog made it.

rnz is a disaster on so many fronts: its unforgivable war propagandising, the disdain it holds for its core broadcast audience, the disastrous hiring decisions, the declining news standards, the “digital first” tabloidisation strategy, the transfer of power from editorial roles to management roles

News sites have the best ads.

On top of humanities and social sciences being cut from eligibility for the Marsden Fund, changes to 're-balance' the histories curriculum, attacks on the Waitangi Tribunal, etc, it seems clear the government would prefer we remain in ignorance about our history. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Checked out Smith and Caughey's closing down sale - big chance for the Mike Hosking impersonators out there.

Ran to Target for laundry detergent, saw about a dozen women in their 60s or thereabouts buying poster board and markers. I would have assumed they were teachers getting supplies until I remembered school's out and then it clicked.

A v thorough article in The Press explaining why Christchurch keeps missing out on visiting bands like Kneecap www.thepress.co.nz/culture/3607...

There it is. The first ever Heat Advisory issued in Alaska. This is the first year it has been an option. @alaskawx.bsky.social

Lucifer was in the year above me at school and played French horn in the school orchestra.

Michael Sheen was on the cross-trainer next to me once. I wanted to have a chat with him in Welsh, but I don’t know if he speaks Welsh and in any case I don’t speak it very well, so it wouldn’t have been anything but very awkward.

Once handed Helen Clark an asparagus roll

Jordan Luck once got me and my friends into a silver scrolls after party by telling the door guy we were his band

1996. I’m commuting from Chicago to LA every week for a few months. Rush back from the office to the hotel bar each night for a few martinis. Cheryl Hines is my charismatic bartender at the Hotel Intercontinental. It’s a shame where her choices led her. 🤨

I was running for a train in Wellington many (bloody MANY) years ago, and Sam Neill held the door for me.

Rhino from Gladiators flirted with me on my hen night mid 90’s.

R just said, wait, what about the time that Grace Coddington curled her lip at you in New York. I said, babe, that was not minor.

The plunder of our seas by industrial fishing is a monstrosity in which almost everyone unwittingly collaborates. For decades this truth has been deliberately hidden from us. Now at last the consensus is cracking. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This is profoundly shortsighted. Monitoring saves lives. Money too, if that’s what you care about! Remember that glacier collapse in Switzerland a few days ago? The village was evacuated in time precisely because of work like this. #DRR

Man do I have some news about traditional country music.

“The man who owned the house was just wearing his pants, no top, no shirt, no anything.”

The human touch is not lost.

Using a tactic made popular by pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong, an anti-ICE protestor neutralizes a tear gas round using a traffic cone and water. #3janeTVOnX @iwriteok.bsky.social @jamesstout.bsky.social

The reason its an “echo chamber” is because individual people are allowed to control the people they see. The algorithm is not going to force people’s opinions at you. This is a good. We are so used to algorithms forcing stuff on us that we don’t remember what its like to curate our own space.

A teen we know has just come out as trans. My understanding is that the parents (who we’ve known for years) had concerns & some reluctance about it but are now on board. I’ve just contacted the parents to tell them that our whānau supports their teen 💯. It felt important to do this. Arohanui. 🏳️‍⚧️

A senator gets arrested & the Dem leadership goes crazy*. Trans ppl get persecuted, criminalised & erased & they make speeches about ‘compromise’ & ‘decorum’. The Dem leadership are learning that what Trump can do to trans ppl, he can do to them. Now if only there were a poem about that… …first…

Good on them. Paywalled, but the video at the top plays and is impressive.

I don't want to doom-predict, but with this weekend coming up, with all the protests planned across the country, and with Trump's military parade 'celebration', it all could get really very very messy.

Politicians in NZ, on both sides of the house, that go on this radio station to get interviewed by the unethical Sean Plunket are putting their support behind this and his other egregious behaviour. #NZpol

seconds before a senator was forcibly removed from a press conference, pushed to the ground, and handcuffed for attempting to question the government, the government marching the military into los angeles said it intends to "liberate" california and the city from its lawfully elected leaders
