Heartbroken by the news about Maurice Gee. Our families moved in the same circles and I was friends with his daughters when we were tiny people. He was such a kind and gentle person (despite the dark topics his books explored) and his home was somewhere I always felt safe and accepted.

Maurice Gee – and his Under the Mountain – have been part of my life for almost 50 years. In 1979 my father gave me and my sister the book of Under the Mountain. We auditioned (unsuccessfully – my fault) for the TV series; a few years later I played Theo in the Radio NZ adaptation of the story.

The target is 140,000 by 2030. Over the last year we increased by 21,000 to 214,000. But at least RNZ summarise the strategy for reducing benefit numbers succintly... Punish and demean the poor with bureaucratic violence and make out like 214,000 'jobseekers' can fit into 10,000 mismatched jobs.
