I think we can all agree that Maurice was the best Bee Gee. #totp

Maurice Gee 1931 – 2025 This television adaptation of his classic sci-fi novel Under the Mountain scared the bejesus out of a generation of New Zealand children. www.nzonscreen.com/title/under-...

I wrote a brief piece on Maurice Gee’s Under the Mountain for The Spinoff. RIP you legend of children’s fiction. thespinoff.co.nz/books/29-12-...

I think I have read The Priests of Ferris at least a hundred times. Or imagined I had a big blue bear and a lethal red cat. If there is another world I can conjure in a second, it will always be O. His adult stuff was also pretty great. Maurice, gee

Heartbroken by the news about Maurice Gee. Our families moved in the same circles and I was friends with his daughters when we were tiny people. He was such a kind and gentle person (despite the dark topics his books explored) and his home was somewhere I always felt safe and accepted.

Maurice Gee – and his Under the Mountain – have been part of my life for almost 50 years. In 1979 my father gave me and my sister the book of Under the Mountain. We auditioned (unsuccessfully – my fault) for the TV series; a few years later I played Theo in the Radio NZ adaptation of the story.

Farewell to the great Maurice Gee. His novels go on looking clearly at the world and introducing us to ourselves. www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3607...

Very sad that Maurice Gee has died. From reading Plumb in 1979 he has been at the centre of my sense of the world.

Champion

The target is 140,000 by 2030. Over the last year we increased by 21,000 to 214,000. But at least RNZ summarise the strategy for reducing benefit numbers succintly... Punish and demean the poor with bureaucratic violence and make out like 214,000 'jobseekers' can fit into 10,000 mismatched jobs.

“A deranged maniac impersonated a police officer and killed lawmakers but if you’re an immigrant be sure you immediately comply with plain clothes people who won’t identify themselves telling you to get in a van”, what a fuckin country

Sure reads like a planned assassination to give Republicans control of the Legislature The Minnesota House was tied 67-67 until Hortman (D) was murdered The Minnesota Senate is tied 34-34, unless Hoffman (D) dies

I originally thought that promise was the end of this year, but how would you know with our media sometimes

Greater Los Angeles is a peaceful city the size of the entire state of Delaware. There 18.5 million of us, from all walks of life. We love our city. We do not need anyone to "liberate" a city that is already free. #NoICE #NoNationalGuard #NoMarines #NoKings

From the No Kings protest in my hometown:

My husband became a US citizen yesterday and he took the little flag they gave him to the No Kings protest in Lansing today 😍

Talked to so many people who were at the first protests of their lives today. Ex-Republicans, introverts, 90-year-olds and 3-year-olds. This was at an intersection in a 60,000 person town. Haven’t felt hope like this in my life.

Protesters formed a human banner at Ocean Beach during the "No Kings" protests in San Francisco on Saturday. The protest is among nationwide demonstrations against President Donald Trump. 📸: Santiago Mejia

Just sent my 74 year old mother off to a protest with a little backpack full of water, electrolytes, saline eye rinse, and a slip of paper with important phone numbers on it. They grow up so fast 🥹

Fascinating article.

An extractive rent-seeking focus is holding Aotearoa back.

The dog made it.

rnz is a disaster on so many fronts: its unforgivable war propagandising, the disdain it holds for its core broadcast audience, the disastrous hiring decisions, the declining news standards, the “digital first” tabloidisation strategy, the transfer of power from editorial roles to management roles

News sites have the best ads.

On top of humanities and social sciences being cut from eligibility for the Marsden Fund, changes to 're-balance' the histories curriculum, attacks on the Waitangi Tribunal, etc, it seems clear the government would prefer we remain in ignorance about our history. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Checked out Smith and Caughey's closing down sale - big chance for the Mike Hosking impersonators out there.

Ran to Target for laundry detergent, saw about a dozen women in their 60s or thereabouts buying poster board and markers. I would have assumed they were teachers getting supplies until I remembered school's out and then it clicked.
