Possible no greater gap between a thing looking like lighthearted fun and actual reality than what us kids in the 80's thought Saturday Night Fever was all about and what it was actually all about

This was the first movie my wife ever saw in the theater at 7 or 8, after Grease made John Travolta a teen-icon, they re-released it along with an edited version of Saturday Night Fever with some of the darkest stuff taken out, but boy, she sure does remember that bridge scene was still in it
Been thinking about this movie bc the algorithm recently fed me clips of The Bee Gees walking out of interviews bc the host kept "lightheartedly" making fun of their whole thing the whole time, which is its own whole issue, how these songs aren't "serious" bc they're disco
Anyway, pretending to do the John Travolta finger point dance move thing at the eighth grade homecoming dance in 1988 was a guaranteed surefire laff-getter
