I had this exact conversation recently, too (off the back of a conversation about not using plurals with numbers ... because Welsh) it's not even like English nicked the word sheep and forgot to nick the plural (as I think is the case with moose)
But then that gets confusing, because the plural of mouse really should be (but unaccountably isn't) meeses. At least according to the Muppets, anyway.
Or, as as child at my sending church misheard, "no Jesus for us meeses."
Resulting in this conversation:
Me: "the whole creation joins in praising God: animals, and birds, and plants, and even the earth itself."
Child: "but not mice."
Me: 🤨
