I don't remember seeing the *formation* of a surface rupture like this before.

This was a 7.7 Mw quake near Thazi in Myanmar on 28 March 2025. The fault rupture was strike-slip at a depth of 10 km, likely along a N-striking fault.

Yep. Often "P" is taken to mean "primary" and "S" for "secondary", on the basis of their relative arrival times (although often also used for "pressure", with its counterpart being "shear", given their longitudinal and transverse natures, respectively).

Wow. I've been playing with a tectonics mapper for world building. It's got this table for velocity magnitude. How far a plate moves over time. Values like 3cm per year are something I know about but somehow I didn't think the landscape could just jump a foot in 10 seconds.

Yeah that's pretty much how quakes work! The plates would like to slide smoothly past each other but they get stuck together and that (up to) 3cm/year just builds up as stress for decades or centuries until something gives and it slides meters in a minute or so.

There are lots of places where the slip is smooth (no quakes), like deep in the earth (too goopy) or some surface faults where conditions are right (I know of one in California). There's also places with tremor and slip where there are 100s of tiny quakes in swarms instead of single big ones

Fascinating. I was about 25-30 miles from the Loma Prieta epicenter in 1989. My house was structurally ok (things broke) but SF and Oakland had terrible damage farther away.

I've seen a park along the San Andreas Fault where an old wooden fence is no longer aligned due to slip like in this video.

How? The date stamp on the video is consistent with a known quake in that area on that date, and the surface behaviour is consistent with the known properties of that quake. Do I know the person who took the video? No.

Pretty sure there was no human in charge of that camera. It looks like a security cam focused on the gate. It's always recording but only saves from 10 seconds before and after any movement plus the time in-between.

I work in the geospatial field and all I can think of (beyond the obvious destruction) is how any existing mapping would become wildly less accurate in the span of a few seconds. I'm not sure if Myanmar has much in the way of terrain maps but a wild shift like that would wreak havoc. Crazy to watch.

Yes, absolutely. In fact, precision GPS (or satellite-based positioning systems more generally) is one of the main methods to track and characterise surface ruptures from quakes.

If you mean whether maps will have to be redrawn, probably not—this rupture was "only" a few metres.
