I am a senior and have never played the video games. I must say your enthusiasm has peaked an interest. May I ask please, are there any games that would be good for dementia patients?Maybe something soothing with a sense of accomplishment and humor for my husband? Or something we could do together?

Tetris in vr is really stunning, beautifully designed and very relaxing. More fitness but Beat Sabre is a lot of fun, as is Smash Drums! X

These are on Apple/Android mobile phones, low stakes, short play time (if you want), and you’re not playing not under a timer.

(Bonus suggestion: if you want to get a bit silly, Donut County is delightful, although the very last level does need some coordination)

I’m a bit late stumbling across this post, but thank you! I’m wary of making any bold claims about Bloom, but we’ve had anecdotal reports of people with advanced dementia responding well to it. One non-verbal patient started happily singing along with it, which was very moving.

Quite! It was unexpected though, by me at least. I hadn’t thought beyond making an experimental music device, but we quickly started getting messages from carers of autistic children as well as dementia patients. And many, many parents getting children to sleep…

Hope it helps. You can play a game in a few minutes (or have a multi-round tournament). There’s no storyline to follow, and the controls are simply rotating blocks. There’s a fun degree of strategy when you get power ups too, to either give yourself a boost or hinder your opponent.

I think Cities: Skylines II would fit the bill. It’s a city builder game so the challenges of a city planner (traffic, economy, pollution, etc) offer challenges to keep you sharp & offer a sense of accomplishment. And I find the beautiful maps & soundtrack to be pretty soothing 👍

MACHINARIUM (Amanita) BUT *you* will have to have cheat-sheet for solutions (can get complicated). However, for sheer visual/imaginative beauty, and ease of character locomotion, I think it would be an engrossing and enchanting experience for anyone (as long as you have the solve list in hand 😎)

Easy-move main character can explore and test items in fantastical environs (eventually finding the ‘right’ grab may be up to you… but here the journey is truly the ‘win’). Humorous and beautiful.
