Books were once described to me by a professor as "windows and mirrors". They help us learn about others we wouldn't normally experience (windows) and reflect on our own lives (mirrors).

When I read diverse authors, not only do I get the wider window to a culture I may never experience for myself, I get their unique and personal perspective. The layering of these stories from people and places I may never see with my own eyes is how I am assured that we have commonality, humanity.

To learn more about the world we are in by listening to the voices of those in it.

And if someone doesn’t like that argument, or doesn’t want to hear about “woke” or “DEI” - if you only read authors who look or sound like you, you miss out on amazing stories!!

To find out the perspective of people whose lives are very different from your own: the world would be very dull if everybody thought and did the same things. Not everybody is able to travel, but this is something most people can do quite easily.

When the authors you read are diverse, your reading time is filled with surprises and possible new insights. You can't anticipate what might come up, so you're not making assumptions about what you haven't read. Instead, it's new and uncharted territory. Let reading be an adventure!

Different perspectives of … everything. Once I discovered how male American my author choices had been, I made a concerted effort to read non-American, women, and non-white authors. I have discovered great works, learned, & gained new perspectives.

The dull wish the world defined, objective, mathematical, materialistic, predictable.

It is not. We reach out to each other with new songs and stories to try and tell the same truths that language cannot define but poetry and prose may hint at, or allow us to see obliquely.

Reading has many benefits & one is introducing the reader to a worldview not necessarily their own. When one can't afford to travel extensively (who can these days?) books are next best thing. Reading expands our horizons, forces us to think beyond our own borders. Reading makes us better people.

a) neurally divergent
2) love of learning
iv) it's my job (bookseller)
4) love to read - anything

It exposes you to different cultures, voices, and experiences, helping you understand the world beyond your own. It challenges assumptions, deepens empathy, & makes literature richer & more reflective of real human variety. Plus, great stories come from everywhere—why limit yourself?

Because I can't possibly know what life looks like to someone else unless they share that with me. It helps build empathy, awareness, and perspective and ensures I don't stay in a bubble and miss out on the opportunity to learn and grow.

Reading about people like myself is boring and does not teach me anything.

Reading about different people, with different life experiences, from different cultures & backgrounds, teaches us new information & nurtures empathy.
