I'm not exactly what anyone could call a tree hugger, but even I think that poor tree should have its own chalk outline and a thorough police investigation launched.

The time it took for that tree to grow, it deserved more than a shrug and the chainsaw.
Councils should have to write reports for review & have to show other options had been investigated & weren't viable before cutting healthy trees.

Building a new, separate footbridge would have been hugely beneficial in a number of different ways over the next 50 years - but Leeds can’t afford to do that NOW.
This country doesn’t invest because it can’t afford to invest. (Unless it taxed wealth and unearned income more).
I knew there had to be valid reasons. But as a layperson didn't have the understanding to see beyond the murdered trees.

To be honest it’s the cutting down of the tree so that a TEMPORARY footbridge can be put in place that rankles most. I suspect that a tree lost to a PERMANENT footbridge (with compensatory planting) would have garnered less opposition (but still some - irreplaceable habitat).
Leeds can’t afford to be more imaginative.
