Read a thing once claiming that (early) medieval people didn’t have a sense of humor but dude how do you know? Humor is so contextual, like if you made an 8th century peasant watch Seinfield or whatever they’d be baffled.

I know the family sagas weren’t written until much later, but I expect the dry humor they have wasn’t a new development at the time. And lord knows what wordplay and slang we’ve lost over the centuries.
