Not sure that I've ever seen a bad word said on Shackleton. what do you know?

Might be interesting. Hurley was a strange guy; surely tough to manage, yet Shackleton managed. But Shackleton might not have been the saint everyone paints, either. Saw some pretty nasty things said about him recently; not sure basis.

Ranulph Fiennes' book is somewhat critical of him - basically a guy who was lost in his life other than exploring. There's also the argument that every one of his missions fell short of its goal - which is probably a bit unfair.

This isn't it (piece is very old), but maybe something of it. It is strange the way he had his books ghost-written by an uncredited NZud journo. Not that they're badly written or anything (they aren't); just seems odd. But that wasn't the main complaint, iirc.

I understand he was a gun ho organiser who would bring on a lot of his own problems, but awesome once in the crisis he brought about. You need to check out the support teams problems who were to set up the recovery on the other side of Antartica.
