I’m a lifelong A’s fan (deeply pained sigh). There was such a great book to be written about that era, although truth be told a lot of their offensive success was down to rampant steroid use in the clubhouse. But Lewis needed to make it about how Billy B was infallible and that shaped the narrative.

I mean, anyone who watched the A’s day in and day out could have told you that Eric Chavez and Scott Hatteberg were not the secret sauce. They were free riding on Tejada’s MVP season and an underrated collection of role players.

But pitching is all that elevated that squad over .500.

💯. Lewis had a narrative going in, and that was that no one had ever taken a walk before in baseball history and goddamnit, the A’s were reinventing the game by doing it. The fact that their offense was basically average and their pitching was beyond elite was just noise.

That was a fun team to watch. These shaggy off brand role players and then these young masterful pitchers. I lol’d for real a couple times a zito’s curve. But yeah Lewis loves himself a great man story.

Those few years when Zito’s fastball wasn’t quite batting practice enough to render his curveball irrelevant were really special. I still don’t know what the Giants were thinking since his trajectory was really obvious by then, but it was a fun ride while it lasted.
