It's not common but not unheard of. Gay couples will adopt (sometimes steal) eggs and incubate them. Egg theft happens routinely in the wild. It would be interesting to see how many of the thieves are actually males and not females who've lost their eggs.
I guess I've known that homosexuality exists in the animal world. So, no I am not surprised. There isn't as much difference between humans and animals, except animals are more accepting.

I believe the reason that you often get gay penguin couples is so they can adopt discarded chicks which can often happen with penguins, so it actually saves baby penguins that might otherwise die.
