i am firmly against capital punishment as something imposed upon civilians found guilty of crimes, no matter how terrible. i strive toward an anti-carceral ethos.

however, i don't think that public figures need necessarily be treated w/ the same caution when their crimes are political acts

It was mainly poor people getting that treatment. The rich usually got a quick kill if they were sentenced to death, which was extremely rare. The only real exception was the French Revolution.

A friend of mine grew up in Romania- under Nicolae Ceauşescu - It was so chilling when she told me how important it was that the bodies were displayed -"the people would never have believed it otherwise" No one would have felt 'safe' or that it was over. I didn't understand till she said that.
