Two of those charges stem from the fatal shooting of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband—each carrying up to 40 years in prison. The other two charges, for allegedly wounding Senator John Hoffman and his wife, each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years. 2/x
The second degree murder charges will likely be upgraded to first degree after convening a grand jury. Grand juries are required in MN to file indictments that could be sentenced to life imprisonment (which includes first degree murder).
Yeah, you don't put on a Halloween mask, don a fake cop outfit, put on blinker lights on a patrol car in the background, without it being slightly premeditated. Also, a manifesto is a dead giveaway.
Unreal they didn't think it was that, so they slap him with a 2nd degree, which clearly it wasn't. 🙄
Yeah. But apparently in MN the grand jury has to be the one to charge with first degree. So I’m sure his charges will eventually be upgraded, because how could they not?!
States will always have jurisdiction over crimes committed in their territory. The feds typically only have a say when there’s some specific federal aspect(crossing state lines, etc) which is generally defined by statute- and that generally doesn’t stop the state from charging base on its own laws
The charges say 4 counts of 2nd murder, but also that murder was “attempted” for victims 3 & 4, and news articles are saying 2 counts attempted. Which is really indicated in the complaint?
How is something planned that carefully a second-degree crime? I thought first-degree meant you wanted to do it ahead of time, you planned to kill, and you carried it out in two of these cases.

The people he allegedly killed were part of the government, albeit from a state government, but is it a federal case?
I’m guessing it’s a state crime and therefore Trump can’t pardon.
