I live elsewhere, but saw the hurricane tracks and flood forecasts *several days* before. I called friends and family in NC, they already knew.

Similar inland hurricane impacts hit Vermont a couple years ago.

That said, there's only so much prep you can do for floods and the devastation is real.

exactly, we don't even have proper prep for slightly larger amounts of snow lol. the warnings were kinda downplayed, even I heard that it "couldn't be that bad" until less than a day before when it changed to "uh....." lol. we knew it would hit, but were sandbagging for a bad thunderstorm basically.

plus the intentional misinfo surrounding FEMA sending aid. they did in fact help us a lot! but in such a chaotic time, it was easy for outside sources to confuse and condemn.

we also had reps from AT&T as well as Duke (power company) visiting local gov't buildings shortly before the worst hit to try to organize a plan. things would have been much worse if they did not do that.

long story short, there is still much destruction to clean up and there will be for a while still because we aren't getting outside help anymore. but I mainly want the takeaway to be that we were failed and people died and/or lost everything.

Buncombe county represent! I remember the Duke trucks staging in anticipation. I also remember getting regular alerts saying “We expect this to meet 2004 levels” and then “we expect this to exceed 2004 levels” and then “we expect this to exceed 1916 levels” and at that point it’s just “.. well shit”

I live right near the French Broad but also VERY uphill from it, close enough that I was getting some broad evac warnings. I used to tell my friends not to worry, it would take a flood of Biblical proportion to reach the house… did not need to stress test that! 😅

I do actually believe we were given proper warning. Reading NWS alert in hindsight is just as bone-chilling to me as Katrina, and now I've been through both. I was panicked, my native coworkers were calm. Just was no precedent for this. No media mentions the 2 days of unrelated rain BEFORE Helene!
