It's a good point, the worst thing is the randomness, is this a good roll from a good batch or not, is this one of the good frames on the roll or not, leaving your with a bit of a lottery.

I had quite a fair bit of curved banding running across the width with this 517. Not every frame though, seems exposure sensitive to how prominent the banding appears.

By banding do you mean both solid and semi-solid bands across the film, randomly, some fainter than others?

Oh no, I haven't seen that type 🙄 although it looks a bit like the light leaks I was getting, you could see the detail of the felt from the aperture of the bulk loader they used.

Ok - roll 2 (because there’s nothing better to do at 6am on a Sunday).

Same issue. I don’t believe it’s the camera (it better not be!!) as the shutter travels vertically it I’ll try one more roll at some point in an older camera and see.

Well at £2.99 a roll it is actually cheap I think, and this old cine film rerolled as 35mm cassettes may well have been produced in the 90s or before. TBF Ilford's 35mm films of today are as good as ever.

Strongly disagree. I carried out extensive testing a few yesrs ago and negatives produced from FP4 and HP5 are nowhere near as good as ones I made 25 years ago using the same films and developers.

Ilford themselves privately admit that they now use less silver in their emulsions, and the binding agents have been altered to conform to EU regulations in the 00s.
In my experience, only T-grain and Delta films are worth bothering with now. And they're not 'cheap'.

I've not done the retrospective testing you've done, but I do know you can make great photos with all Ilford film. I hasten to reinforce the point that my original comment was about TYPE 517 FP4 which is not marketed by Ilford. TBF I prefer Delta 400, but I bulk roll that for 35mm to keep cost down

Understood... to be clear, the modern films aren't 'bad' they're just not 'as good'. I genuinely mourn the old HP5... That, combined with the cost-per-frame, inconsistency and inconvenience, makes it very much a hobbyist proposition (even though I no longer shoot professionally).

This was a particularly bad roll, with light leaks and marks on the image on a third of the frames, previous rolls I've shot have had problems, but not as many. I would definitely dev. the ones you have first Ian, see what you think.

What problems did you find then ? It can be a tad contrasty, I am generally printing at a lower grade than normal , cutting dev time helps. But D23 is fairly soft working so would think it’s a good match.

Light leaks and marks on the images, they affected a third of the shots on this roll, I don't mind a few, but when they are on shots you really wanted it gets annoying, previous rolls have had fewer issues TBF.

I've developed four rolls so far and had similar problems on all of them. Always the last few frames and sometimes in the middle of the roll. Mix of streaks across like yours, and circular spots on the end frames.
It's a shame as I've been getting some good results but I probably won't buy any more.

Not experienced that I have to say. You should message them, they are very responsive I’ve found and would want to stamp on any issues folks are experiencing.
