Quick question for people... If YouTube videos are in 4K, do you watch them in 4K? It seems most content is 1080p still. It used to be uploading 4K resulted in 1080p getting a higher encoding rate, but that seems to have changed. Is it worth uploading 4K still? - ThreadSky

I usually watch in 2K if its available. I may switch to 4K if I'm watching some gameplay footage for research purposes to reduce compression artifacts. I'd say if you do a lot of game graphics related content it might be worth it

My preference is set to the highest quality available, but YouTube regularly ignores that. So it autos to 1080p or worse. If I really want to bump up the quality, I go for 1440p, when available, but there is no reason for 4k, just a bandwidth killer.

1080p or lower is fine for myself TBH - often on a tablet or phone, and those displays aren't 4K. Perhaps something highly detailed or technical could use 4K, but often 1080p suffices.

Personally I never watch YouTube videos in 4K. 1080p generally seems fine to me. Though that might just be a holdover from when it took ages to load videos for me like 12+ years ago.

I watch, like a lot of people, on my second screen. Often that means 720 or 1080 because I'm saving bandwidth and GPU time for whatever is on the main screen. 🤔

Depends on a number of factors:
1. If music/podcast, why play video at all?
2. Highest res. is higher than my device's res., watch at a lower res. that fits my aspect ratio.
3. If screen is tiny (phone), always watch at 1080p or less.
4. If technical, do I need to see the details? If not, low res.

Only device I have that actually benefits from a 4K resolution is my movie room TV, which has 4K native res. and HDR. If given the choice, I'd rather have 2K with HDR than 4K without HDR. Again, that's depending on what I'm watching, though. I wouldn't bother turning HDR on for game dev tech vids.

I watch the vast majority of YouTube on my tablet that only has 1080p or the second monitor of my PC (same). The only thing I will watch in full resolution is trailers or a not-E3 presentation on my TV.

Most screens at my place max at 2K except for two 4K televisions (one is pretending to be a monitor). Typically no 4K demand for consuming streaming vids. Lots of bandwidth and rendering for creator for very little return. Yes, I'm ignoring the Macs in the building because, ha! 🍎<🐧=😁
