I once went to a Broadway musical (Moulin Rouge) where the woman sitting behind me sang through the. entire. show, even after I repeatedly asked her to stop. I was floored.
Forget it. Broadway has become a freak show. They never should allow people to take snacks and drinks to the seats because it is the gateway to all sorts of poor behavior.
Also, there is a big* difference between "theater kid energy" and what this is, which is a compulsive and entitled need to make yourself the center of every experience.
*by "big," I mean small. Please don't make me look too closely at this. Feelings could get hurt.
I was at a screening of the new Luther Vandross documentary and some (of us) sang along to his songs. But not loudly. A small group sang out during the credits and finished the song after the credits stopped. It was sentimental and funny, not a problem.
I don’t want to listen to non professions sing along to a Hollywood musical in a theater either dude. (Except for maybe rocky horror). I don’t think it makes you mean. 👾
They can all go to a midnight screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and shout at the screen/sing along with the musical numbers to their hearts' content. That's what we did as dorky theater kids. Learn from your elders, Gen Z!
See a showing during the day if you can. It’s virtually empty.
It’s a wonderful movie, and the performances are beautifully nuanced.
I would recommend seeing it in a large screen if you can
I love what they did with movies like Mamma Mia and Across the Universe. They had special singalong screenings if that’s your thing. But if you belted it out in a non-singalong screening, they’d warn you and if you didn’t stop, they’d kick you out.
‘Official’ singalong showings are scheduled to start Christmas Day. I would guess that the superfans who know all the words will have seen it by next Monday. But honestly, anything that gets people into theaters is fine by me.
Exactly! We’re there to enjoy the professionals onstage! Not the person sitting next to us. This happened to me just a couple of weeks ago in a huge theater.
I’ve never seen the stage show so the idea of a big budget musical at the cinema was really attractive to me (even if I have to go twice to see the whole thing).
It’s much less attractive to me now. In fact I might wait for streaming. At least my cats won’t be singing along.
Not all the showings will be like this.
I would definitely recommend seeing it on the big screen. It’s a wonderful adaptation from the stage musical. I saw it during the day, which I know is not possible for everyone, but the theatre was virtually empty.
Agreed! I don’t want to sit in a theater with a bunch of people who think they’re American Idol-worthy when they’re just really shrieking like feral alley cats for attention.
I’ve shamed many misbehaving theatre-goers into submission over the years. If you sing over Cynthia Erivo I will not hesitate to take you down in front of a packed cinema.
At 17 I saw Grease in the theater. The girls seated in front of me sang every song except the one with “Ra ma la ma ding dong… Shoo wop shoo waddy waddy yippity boom de boom”. They got offended when I asked if they didn’t know the words to that one. Maybe that’s why I don’t enjoy movie theaters.
Come watch it in San Jose. Bunch of brain-dead zombies here. Thankfully, for this reason only. Nothing like this happens. No one even danced or sang at Taylor Swift.
There's a pretty easy fix to that I would think. If you specify some showings (or alternate theaters if it turns out it's a big hit) as sing-along and silent, I bet you would see a lot of self-selection. And maybe make ejection or formal shushing of non-compliant singers more straightforward.
I guess it's just the proliferation of main character syndrome, but how even the most basic movie theater etiquette has somehow become controversial hurts my brain.
I hope they did go out of their way to find the most annoying "theater kid" adult they could find to quote, otherwise the possibility that she is representative is somewhat horrifying
I went to an early showing and it was virtually empty.
My entire cast and I went to see it and had the freedom to applaud when the urge arose (quietly in our seats).
None of us sang, but that because we are all professionals that were more interested in hearing the amazing performances on screen
I have to hope this is a case of a handful of isolated incidents getting picked up as a "trend". Of course this might embolden the awful folks that think it's ok

Sometimes I’m grateful for the shows where I’m wearing in-ear monitors.
We appreciate the enthusiasm, but do worry that it bothers the other patrons that come to hear the cast perform.

I’ll give that a go because it’s much easier for us and generally quieter.
My wife is HoH and it means we have to wait for a lot of films to be VoD.
(Also Fuck Amazon for the same reason).
So so many have no respect for others in movie theatres anymore.

THERE ARE SPECIFIC SCREENINGS WHERE YOU CAN DO THAT—GO TO THOSE
DO NOT DO IT OTHERWISE🚨🚨
