The Oscars are a big show that will be seen by millions of people and will bring national attention to Los Angeles. That can be made to be very useful, and it's worth thinking clearly about how to do that. But "clearly" means not indulging in "This has reminded us that we're all trivial fools!"

I'll add one thing: You can hate the fact that awards are an industry in L.A. But they are. They employ service workers, drivers, stylists, hospitality people; they drive restaurant and hotel business, etc. After covid & the strikes, people need the work. So, with respect, who cares how it "looks"?

i'll add another thing: a lot of music artists are cancelling gigs in LA out of "respect for the fire recovery efforts" and honestly it's pointless, we NEED shows here, not just for the mental relief it would provide for citizens, but lots of people work at these venues and they need the income

The Oscars also employ a large union crew, and Altadena was one of the largest residential areas for film / TV workers. Cancelling them and other ceremonies in the town hurts the crew even more by denying them one of their biggest gigs in the first quarter of the year.

Also, the Oscars are March 2nd. That’s six weeks from now. Meanwhile the Grammys, which are Feb 2nd, have already consolidated their week and given a fundraising focus to each event. There are a lot of talented people involved in these awards shows. It’s possible to do things the right way.

Agreed. Lots of opportunities to solicit donations and support impacted people. Impacted people aren’t just the ones directly impacted. Others have lost their entire livelihoods as some businesses are not able to operate, or people who have been hired by home owners have lost their income source

Plus, there’s an army of service workers who earn a lot from the ceremony- beauty salons, spas, stylists, restaurants, etc. The ecosystem around the entertainment industry is already under economic stress & concerned about the future.
