I am going through some old boxes and looking for old tech to throw out. I found the external hard drive that died on me 12 years ago. I just gave it one last shot, and it fired up.
I've recovered about six years of photos of my kids that I thought were gone forever. I am overjoyed.

I have got some tunes.
I salute your hard drive's effort
She turned 18 last year.

Now you’ve got me digging out my old hard drive that I put away a decade ago. No luck so far, but I’ll keep digging.
(Also, we've got one of those somewhere - we should give it a go...)
This should freaking be a featured short at Sundance.
I can feel your joy from here 🥳
Will they be happy or annoyed?
(I'd probably have one of each 🙃)
I lost about 20 years of pictures.
I was so upset.
Some made me sad seeing them.
I said to myself.
Maybe I lost them for a reason.
They're in my memory until I leave.
Maybe it was best not to see what brought sadness to me.
Instead a passing image now and then and it's gone.
I think that’s the best story I’m gonna read today! 😊

I had a hard drive melt
And I was so upset I lost a lot of photos
Now I have an external hard drive that I back up every so often
Make sure you donate any tech stuff
Sometimes the college teach kids how to build computers
That’s how my son learned how to build computers
I'm doing a happy dance for you.
YAY!
"never throw Anything out"....
Now the schoolmaster bit about the importance ***BACKUPS***!
Enough said, I hope you get them all back.
👍🏻🙂
In recent years I’ve had a couple of RAID arrays fail, yet because I also back up to single external drives not list anything.
Have to relink Lightroom to the changed image location PITA, but worth the effort. 🙂
The photography I tend to do is mainly for clients to put on their websites or in their brochures, so once they have them or are on the server, I delete them.

Baby photos of teenage me and also my eldest child.
Highly recommend.
$ 967.oo to live on stage 4 kidney cancer and can't afford cat food because of the 800.00 dollar Bill's to keep from living in street
I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Do you want to boot to a drive or install? [install]
There's an existing os there, overwrite? [yes]
Long story short, I came back to find my hard drive formatted. Four days before, I'd burned every picture I'd taken of my son to a DVD, but I didn't remember that right away.
It was a hard couple hours until I found it.
(A bit of a treasure trove really).
Ah well, sometimes things go your way, despite that cúnt Felon47
How many of them will live to regret it, I don't know.
My mind is racing, haunted by the thought of what memories I’ve lost—moments frozen in time, now slipping further away into oblivion.
I can't quite believe it.
Doh!
It would have been worth the risk of getting caught.
Now, when can you come over and show me...

I’ve had a similar experience and kept the drive as a literal bookend Just In Case. It’s worth a try.
OTOOH yesterday I found a box of CDs in the loft where I had copied that data from 😀

is there a linux solution to hard drive recovery?
I have a parallel printer cable if you’d like to add that to your dead tech collection.
I sent it to a clean room around 2017 to try to recover it, and they couldn’t. Apparently there was a catastrophic drive head crash.
I kept it in case recovery tech improved. Has it?
It hurt so much. Sadly was fried due to old age, so couldn't recover
I've gone through the broken hard drive stuff before, and it can be heartbreaking
Just replace "kids" with "cats".
