In a truly tectonic Overton Window shift, the California Assembly just voted 63-0 to advance #AB609, a major new bill by Buffy Wicks to create a statutory exemption from CEQA for environmentally friendly infill housing.
Fantastic news for both housing and the environment!

This is a political earthquake. No other way to put it.
I am *shook*.
This doesn't seem to help the biggest problem with housing issues which is moneied interests.
So what is your solution other than “wait for the Revolution?”
I'm not talking about people making profit from housing, I'm talking about wealth disparity driving the housing dilemma.
I would want to levy a tax on unoccupied housing.
Apartments, townhomes and single family homes have been built en masse all over the US. More housing didn't drive down the housing price.
Desperation is the right climate for change.
New Jersey, and specifically Hudson County, NJ is essentially only reason why NYC isn’t Bay Area levels of insane.
And you propose a vacancy tax as a remedy.
You know high vacancy rates is actually pro-tenant and depresses rents?
We are at historic low vacancy rates in major metro areas.
High vacancy means landlords chase tenants and will offer incentives.
So why are you penalizing a market condition that is on the balance, pro-tenant?
I want to penalize holding properties like that.
