What violence, dude?

The nerve to say "These are real people with real families you're hurting" as the literal director of ICE.

Thanks! I'm very happy with how it turned out, would love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks! It's basically just a refined version of my 2023 plenary talk, but I had a lot of fun working on it.

I was all set to say Iron Maiden but then I looked it up to double check and apparently they didn't release an album 'til 1980. So, not Maiden, I guess.

Yeah to be honest I mostly meant I don't know how much I should say in public.

Ironic that a special issue on public-facing scholarship is (mostly) locked behind a paywall, but such is the world of academic publishing. I don't know the exact rules on sharing copies, but if you want to read my thing but don't have access, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I've been feeling this a lot lately too. I think it's easy to forget how much grief and stress the news is causing these days, and how those affect our ability to create. I don't know if that helps, or even if it's what you're dealing with, but I think a lot of folks in our industry can commiserate.

Yeah, seems to be back up for me as well.

Gonna have to try harder than that if you wanna rickroll me.

The main problem I have with video games is that it's currently at least theoretically possible to make a living making them.

In the future, all soundboards will just be one button that says "Make the mix good" and if you press it the venue explodes.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and Hilda.

I hate these things so much. Like, if you calibrate the sensors to stop at your property line, fine, but they never do. It's just motion detection cameras harassing me for being on public land.

Yes, but I grew up in New England.

Annoyingly, there's a whole trend now of people making bot accounts that use LLMs to write mean replies to random tweets. I don't know why, but my guess would be that this is that. (Especially with the LL.M pun in the name.)

The thing that gets me about painting this (or any other worthwhile cause) as an inevitable losing battle is that all battles are losing battles if you don't bother to show up and fight them. Pre-capitulation is not only unhelpful, it's an act of sabotage.

I've been thinking this for years but was never brave enough to say it.

Not a lot of taxonomy fans out there I take it.

Not to the con itself, but I live in LA so I'll probably stop by for a couple parties.

for what it's worth I strongly doubt that this will ever actually get made, for a variety of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with the ethics.

The temptation will be strong. The thumbnails practically design themselves. But there have to be limits, and this feels like an incredibly easy one. The whole thing is disgusting, and even if you're saying it's bad, you're still helping it do its job. Not everything has to be content.

A friend recently recommended Tanya Tagaq's 2016 album Retribution to me and it absolutely whips.

First thing that came to mind was Another World but looking it up I just learned that was originally an Amiga game that was ported to Mac so I don't know if it counts even if I have very strong memories of playing it, on a Mac, in the '90s.

Congrats, Andrew! Extremely well-deserved.
