My take from talking to parents of kids about to leave for college, is that the kids today en masse are focussed on money as a means to success/status that is beyond what past generations experienced. There have always been people who felt this way, but now its an ethos.

I'm not trying to take you to task, I think this is a vitally important puzzle to solve for the future of the left. But I think a lot of people grow up surrounded by coaches, mentors, etc. but still don't choose or consider that path.
