Good leaders don't shy away from advice. Science & the public lose in a major way when federal advisory committees that represent interests of the communities that federal agencies are entrusted to serve are weakened. I'll be speaking at this timely Union of Concerned Scientists webinar. Join us

I'm with Andy Borowitz on this. Enough already with the endless news cycles of declining health of an octagerian. This was/is a surprise to no one. I wish some of the major news goingon got even a fraction of the media's attention this story keeps getting, SMH! www.borowitzreport.com/p/biden-cove...

Know this from personal experience and wish more people knew about this

Thank you for sharing your phenomenal story with us! If you haven't read it yet, you can do so here: 🔗 doi.org/10.1029/2025... #AGUPubs

My son's debut article ❤️✍️: "The immune system is a far too often undiscussed casualty of (wildfires), & long after the last embers of the LA infernos fizzle out, their invisible scars will remain ... the human body is left in a weakened & vulnerable state to infectious diseases" tinyurl.com/2s3vbans

“You have powered through any number of challenges and overcome obstacles, and you leave UC Merced more prepared than ever to succeed in your careers and in your lives.” - Juan Sánchez Muñoz, UC Merced Chancellor. Congratulations, Graduates!

The 80-year recipe stoking America’s Prosperity: 1) Free-market capital investments in brilliant ideas… 2) enabled by Engineering Innovations… 3) based on Science Research in Universities… 4) funded by Grants from the US Government. It’s time more people understood this.

So proud of all our UC Merced graduates! Go Bobcats! Fiat Lux! @ucmerced.bsky.social

It’s always fun and an honor to celebrate our @ucmerced.bsky.social graduates with my wonderful colleagues. @beccaryals.bsky.social @teamrat.bsky.social LES faculty and more.

Congratulations to our 3 soil science PhD graduates — Jennifer, Yulissa, and Melinda! @teamrat.bsky.social @beccaryals.bsky.social

Congratulations to soon-to-be Dr. Melinda Gonzales. Can’t wait to see her shine her bright light into the future. It was a special honor to hood Melinda with my incredible colleague @beccaryals.bsky.social who generously stepped in to mentor Melinda when I started my previous position at DOE.

#Commencement2025 is both celebration of our students' hard work & act of resistance - a defiance to the unreal chaos that our knowledge systems r being subjected to these days. Each moment of joy & diploma represents another dream that will not be deferred & our wish 4 more success 4 our students.

I wasn't alone. Under Biden admin, the President’s Council of Advisors on S&T (PCAST) issued a clarion call for better scicomm, esp. for Federal agencies to make S&T communication & public engagement a core component of their mission and strategy. bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/pcast/briefi...

This is a good start. While in government, I was dismayed by how the value of scicomm was devalued at multiple levels. The hard truth: This is not just about better PR, without effective scicomm, we lose public support for critical investments that benefit EVERYONE. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/s...

Thank you @alondra.bsky.social for your voice, your long and distinguished service to advance knowledge systems for all, and your continued leadership. … if you read one thing today, let it be Alondra’s TIME piece. Powerful!

This is bittersweet. I'm grateful for the honor, but sad by the challenges facing STEM & higher ed. I want to take this moment to recognize the scientists, researchers & educators who continue to advocate 4 & uphold these crucial system, even in difficult times. My thanks to my UC Merced colleagues.

A great read.

"Today's challenges, though major, are not necessarily unique. Around the world, there is a long history of obstacles that science and education have faced and ultimately overcome through persistence, solidarity, and unwavering commitment to the truth." @aaberhe.com

Until recently, the US S&T enterprise & higher ed systems were the envy of the world. The way it's being gutted is beyond heartbreaking. The US innovation engine is crumbling before our eyes. This moment in history is not just sad—it is profoundly tragic & represents an incalculable loss. So unreal.

This is a reminder that federal workers would appreciate you contacting your representatives in Congress to advocate for the programs and services that you value. These representatives set the budget for the federal agencies and departments.

Wonderful, much needed time at the lake with @ucmerced.bsky.social Life and Environmental Sciences faculty and students. … the judges (all kids) voted my dessert the best. Clearly we should let kids make all important decisions from now on — their taste is impeccable!

It’s official, JB Milliken will be the 22nd President of the University of California system. It was a privilege to represent UC faculty interests in this search. … he currently serves as Chancellor of the UT System, previously led the CUNY system, U of NE and was v. Pres of UNC

This statement is always true, as far as I’m concerned. Caffé Central @ UCSF Library.

Science will keep moving forward. After the current administraiton's dismissal of authors for the 6th National Climate Assessment (NCA), AGU and AMS are teaming up to ensure researchers have a platform to share work that informs all on the realities of climate change. news.agu.org/press-releas...

Gardner (1991) argued that “if basic soil science did not exist, there is ample evidence that we need to invent it.” While practical applications are valuable outcomes of soil science research, they should emerge from a deep understanding of soil systems rather than define the discipline's scope.

I was reminded today of this awesome conversation re: #soil I had a while ago w/ “Freakonomics” co-author Steve Levitt on his People I (Mostly) Admire show. I explain "why the ground beneath our feet is one of our greatest resources—&, possibly, 1 of our deadliest threats." youtu.be/ram19YIdYtA?...

📢 New pub: Defining #soil science: Balancing fundamental research and societal needs, in Soil Science Society of America Journal doi.org/10.1002/saj2... @teamrat.bsky.social & I argue, soil science, though crucial for solving environmental challanges, should not be defined solely by its applications

These women in STEM are on a mission to save the world (literally!) 🌍♻️ This #EarthDay, we’re celebrating STEM trailblazers who are making waves in environmental science. From saving the bees to combating fast fashion, here are some trailblazers you should know.

Astronomers have found thousands of planets outside the solar system. All of them are, to my knowledge, garbage. Happy Earth Day to the only good one 🌍

May your soul rest in eternal peace Pope Francis. I honor his adherence to the tenets of Christianity, refusal to give legitimacy to those who use the faith to perpetuate political evils, advocacy for weakest members of society, embrace of science, & compassionate approach toward LGBTQ individuals.

Two UC Davis Feed the Future Innovation Labs, which have strengthened America’s leadership in agricultural innovation and reduced global hunger and malnutrition by empowering people in low-income regions worldwide, are closing because of loss of USAID funding. @ucdavis.bsky.social

Pope Francis’s first papal visit was to Lampedusa, where thousands have perished. There he criticized the “globalization of indifference”. He said we “have forgotten how to cry” for migrants and “take care of each other,” in his homily. It seems the indifference is worsening everywhere.

Excellent #Fire Resilience Seminar, 2025 Wildfire Outlook, and expert panel discussion at @ucmerced.bsky.social today featuring @watchduty.org CEO and cofounder John Mills and our very own @pyrogeog.bsky.social, @climate-guy.bsky.social, Sandie Ha.

This week, we run two discovery sessions at #TED2025 where participants explored the science and importance of soil. I'm grateful to @ted.com for the invitation, and folx from UBC and PRSSS for providing support and essential materials that made it possible. #SoilScience #EnvironmentalEducation
