I was only in the 6th grade, but man, I remember hearing the dumbest arguments about why the US would ultimately win (my civic teacher argued it was because we're geographically bigger than Iraq and drew both countries on the chalkboard).

Although most of the comments here are about the topic, rather than the book, I'd like to put in an actual plug for @sarahkendzior.bsky.social's new memoir, "The Last American Road Trip," which (like all her books) is fantastic. I grew up in a road-tripping family, but this book is eye-opening.
