NIH is ending billions of dollars in foreign subawards, jeopardizing thousands of projects on infectious diseases, cancer and more. Unless foreign researchers secure funding directly from NIH by October — a tall order for any researcher — clinical trials abroad and other research will shut down.

Out today in @jama.com, a joint warning from AEREO, @weareprimr.bsky.social, @aahrpp.bsky.social, and CARE-Q, about how capped indirects and decimation of OHRP risk slowing research and making participants less safe. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Was great to have my colleagues Alice Kayongo and @abinader.bsky.social and visitor Michael Aboneka in our class on policy analysis for @guglobalhealth.bsky.social focused on advocacy strategies. Thank you!!

Unbelievably this mother managed to remain calm for her children in the face of heinous cruelty. And the bravery of the filmmaker! It’s clear who the criminals are.

🚨Georgetown University Law Center students are detailing which law firms have caved and which have stood up to the Trump regime. They have created this spreadsheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets... Please share widely.

The ongoing denigration of expertise, science, and the research enterprise will have both short- and long-term costs for human health and lives

While Big Law cowers in fear of Trump, boutique firms are stepping up to condemn his unprecedented attack on the rule of law. Here is Lex Lumina's statement www.lex-lumina.com/newsroom/lex...

In case it wasn’t clear where we stand. We stand for the rule of law. As every lawyer must.

In the wake of the recent USPTO discretionary denial guidance, thought it was worth going back to this article from Alex Moss and Timi Iwayemi. Corruption from top to bottom. prospect.org/power/trumps...

www.theatlantic.com/health/archi... “Why are people going to be willing to contribute to science and enroll in these studies if they feel like the rug can be pulled out from under them at any time?” Fernandez Lynch told me. Answer: They won't.

Reuters: "The United States has paused contributions to the World Trade Organization, three trade sources told Reuters, as U.S. President Donald Trump's administration ramps up efforts to cut government spending." @emmafarge.bsky.social

We polled Nature readers to ask if they were thinking of leaving the US for jobs abroad. Three-quarters of them (who said they were US-based scientists) said yes. 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Roundtable this Wed at the US Senate, on how Trump and Musk are killing research like cancer and Alzheimer’s research. 2:30pm Eastern. There is a livestream. This would be better in primetime and produced for TV, like the Jan 6 Committee did. But it’s a good start from @baldwin.senate.gov.

"If we don’t resist collectively by all legal means, and by social influence and legislative pressure, we are apt to see the destruction of our most revered institutions and the enormous benefits they accrue to America."

College acceptances are rolling out right now and historically a significant percentage of university communities are international students. The question is whether they will come. (Many international students matriculate assuming they can go home over the holidays etc.)

Funny how things change. Here's Ford's CEO on how American car companies can compete with China's growing dominance in EVs: “The way we compete with them is to get access to their IP just the way they needed ours 20 years ago"

Unfortunately I just got laid off from the USPTO. I was the person in charge of denying design patent applications that are not ornamental.

NEWS: Judge Amir Ali finds that the Trump administration is likely violating separation of powers in partially granting a preliminary injunction in the State Department/USAID foreign aid case. As with the TRO, he also finds the government is likely violating the APA with the non-payment issues.

This is a lighthearted game, but also an illustration of how crucial nonprofit institutions and government funding are for producing foundational biomedical research with enormous public benefits. If the goal is to produce net savings for the US, we should be *increasing* NIH funding.

With his permission, I'm sharing Dean Treanor's response to Ed Martin's letter:

A new form of academic fraud appears to involve (at least in some cases) passing off registered designs as "patents." Science covers this new research by me, @reeserichardson.bsky.social, @nhwise.bsky.social, Spencer Hong & Michael Draper:
