I think in part the higher education funding crisis and the LLM-teaching crisis actually strike at the same problem, which is that education doesn't work without a broad, society-wide sense that the *actual content* of education - not the credential - is valuable.

I feel like it's worth comparing the 2018 and 2024 efforts to unseat Ted Cruz here. It's tempting to just give Beto the win here but you have to take into account that it was a way better national environment. This is probably the best use case for the split ticket wins above replacement measure

I got the best teaching evals of my career for a large course last semester— along with three teaching awards— after rebuilding my intro class around in-class handwritten essays. I simply do not believe that this is unsolvable or that students don't care about actually learning to do their work.
