Strict self preservation and convenience are understandable priorities on an individual level, but societies should always be run based on principles and ideals or it’s dog eat dog, and that from time to time will also mean a bunch of small dogs vs a big dog, they’re not immune.

Empathy leads to building trust which is foundational to civilization, and it’s probably the single most valuable driving force behind the success of the current leading civilization, the Western civilization. Voltaire called it tolerance, Stuart Mill the greatest good for the greatest number.
