🚨Only a few hours left to leave a public comment re: RFK Jr. and Trump administration limiting access to vaccines through the CDC!!! Public Comment at CDC is open until June 20th at 11:59pm EDT. peoplescdc.substack.com/p/rfk-jr-and...

"It's a horror show. We're under attack in every way all the time," says Sarah Kobrin, who has worked at the National Cancer Institute for more than 21 years. "We're told we're worthless. We're told we're cheats.… They're breaking things that won't be repairable." www.npr.org/sections/sho...

Look at that little tiny red bar for May 2025. That's the illegal rescission/impoundment of Congressionally appropriated funds, shown graphically. 3900 grants that DOGE has killed in May. Trump is killing American science and ending disease cures. Come out to protests June 14th, everyone.

“We urge you as NIH Director to restore grants delayed or terminated for political reasons so that life-saving science can continue.” Over one hundred NIH employees publish a letter of dissent to Trump administration attacks on medical research, the “Bethesda Declaration.” 🧪

Those of you asking what you can do to help save medical research - please sign the support letter to the #BethesdaDeclaration and share it widely. What is happening is not normal. Every name helps. actionnetwork.org/forms/add-na...

Boston Globe story about #BethesdaDeclaration is up... www.bostonglobe.com/2025/06/09/m...

Incredible morning of science- plus awesome use of an actual chalkboard for the agenda! #OldSchool

Had the good fortune to run into the amazing @cate-cholamine.bsky.social during Conte Center meeting break! @princetonneuro.bsky.social

Indiana's governor fired all the elected members of Indiana University's Board of Trustees. Given a recent policy change, he'll be able to fill those seats with appointees. Which means he'll basically have unilateral control over IU decisions, including who gets hired, tenured, and fired.

RFK Jr says autism research is a priority, and that he wants to find the cause of the condition by September. He's also overseen a 26% cut to autism research at NIH, per @disabilityscoop.bsky.social.

Excited for a day dedicated to amazing science! Very happy to be on the external advisory board for @princetonneuro.bsky.social Latent Cause Inference Conte Center 🧠

Some brightness for your timeline- it’s Prom night in Pittsburgh! Every year in Highland Park it feels like a red carpet event 🤩

In any given year, thousands of foreign medical graduates enter the match (almost 8,000 in 2022), many of whom are on J-1 visas. Revoking these visas would leave a lot of residency programs in the lurch, making it challenging for them to deliver high-quality patient care.

Texas legislators just passed a bill that gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.

Golden hour 🦮🌅

@upmc.com kneel for George Floyd, racial justice. 5 years out, the group has shrunk but is still filled with spirit. We cannot forget our country’s legacy of slavery, Jim Crow and mass incarceration.

White Coats Against Racism memorial for George Floyd was smaller this year. Never forget #BlackLivesMatter

literally talking about tariffs is part of lab business because we need specialized supplies from China what is this timeline

🗣️Non-federal funding alert!!! Aligning Research to Impact Autism (ARIA) has a new RFA to join their IMPACT Network, a clinical-translational research effort to accelerate care for people across the spectrum by enabling rapid therapeutic development. Up to $15 million over 5 years. bit.ly/3YRYMv3

A National Weather Service office in Kentucky was scrambling to cover the overnight forecast on Friday as severe storms moved through much of the eastern U.S. The office is one of several left without an overnight forecaster as a result of cuts ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency.

Weekly debrief on what's happening in science & higher ed is up! - grant terminations: not just *how much* but *WHO* - HHMI stops all competition, including Hanna Gray - @alondra.bsky.social resigns with a powerful statement - Do we even have a CDC director? All at buttondown.com/liminalcreat...

Assume the boop position 🐶

Ummm not a good sign that the Ghostbusters car passed me on my commute home 😳

Today "a milestone in the evolution of personalized therapies for rare & ultra-rare inborn errors of metabolism" —the 1st human to undergo custom genome editing —from decades of NIH funded research www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.... @nejm.org www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.... www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/h...

Amazing example of the power of federally-funded research in the U.S. 🧪 "[it] began decades ago with federal funding for basic research on bacterial immune systems. That led eventually, with more federal support, to the discovery of CRISPR... www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/h...

Out of ideas 🐶

Fletcher says, why can’t we go pheasant hunting instead of writing grants?

Can any Pennsylvania media ask if Sen Fetterman’s (or McCormick of course) offices are functional? For example are they even staffed? Does anyone answer the phones at all? Anyone responsive to constituents? How is this not a major issue?? @fetterman.senate.gov @wesa.fm @inquirer.com

The Brain-Body Research Institute @IcahnMountSinai is hiring an Associate Director to build clinical and translational research in brain-body sciences. See ad here: neuroscience.mssm.edu/pdf/Brain-Bo.... @sinaibrain.bsky.social @sinaiimmuno.bsky.social @brainbodylab.bsky.social

Important study today in Nature Genetics id's 30 genome-wide significant loci for #OCD!!! A HUGE advance for people w/ OCD. This massive collaboration was funded in part by NIH and was only possible by partnering w/ other countries. Congrats to all authors! 👏👏👏 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

More countries recruiting U.S. scientists. Denmark w/ 200 spots: "We are speeding things up. Vigil for lost NIH research and staff. The tomb of the unknown patient represents all of the people who will die prematurely because their cures were not discovered.
