Men are extremely keen to explain to me that Britain *needs* a domestic steel production plant and doesn't necessarily *need* universities. Okay. Steel contributed about £1.7bn to the UK economy in 2024. Universities contributed more than £200bn.

Ed gets it. He's mentioned before that the biggest question parents of disabled kids ask is, "who will keep them safe when we're no longer around." That's what keeps us awake at night.

A record number of Americans applied for British citizenship in the first three months of this year, and for the right to live and work in Britain indefinitely, according to official data.

The sheer barefaced dishonesty of a regime that is snatching people off the streets for their speech; painting over testimonials to women & minorities in US history; subjugating universities & trying to crush research into subjects it dislikes, standing as a champion of "free speech" is staggering.

Keir Starmer is being advised to urgently pause the Government's plans to cut disability and health benefits by Parliament's work and pensions committee. www.itv.com/news/2025-05...

Committee of MPs urge Starmer to pause disability benefit cuts amid poverty fears. 16m Britons live in poverty. Govt estimates that disability benefit cuts will increase that by 250,000. Full impact assessment not produced. 50 families have more wealth than 50% of the population combined.

Magical thinking latest: that you can have an effective child poverty strategy while leaving the big lever marked 'this lever guarantees child poverty' untouched.

Would that be the same America where law firms and news orgs are being blackmailed by the president or a different America? www.ft.com/content/369c...

If only there were someone in a senior position of power in this relationship

There's no placating the Brexiters, no reasoning with them, no basic comprehension or adulthood. You can't debate papers behaving like the Sun or the Mail this morning. There's nothing to debate with. They view all trading relations with Europe as humiliation.

Now that the Mail and Express and GB News are in full spate over relatively minor improvements to thenEUbtrade agreement, we might as well go the whole hog and get back into the SM.

"The briefing room" on R4?

Dear oh dear. The Telegraph and its writers these days

From unrepresentative parliaments, to chaotic elections, it’s undeniable: our voting system is broken. First Past the Post needs to be scrapped. electoral-reform.org.uk/whats-wrong-...

Let’s see the EU deal first. But it’s worth remembering that if it happens it will have been done less than 10 months into the government’s term. There’s plenty to criticise Labour for - and God knows I do - but this would be a positive achievement, unthinkable under a government of the right.

Anyone know if Bill Keegan still writes for the new Observer? Or has he moved to a different publication?

A thoughtful thread. Very interesting. Difficult subject.

Proud of Bristol standing up to racism again as UKIP tried to spread hatred in our city. They were outnumbered 10 to 1 on three flanks and headed home with their tails between their legs.

In the long term, maybe. But at the moment Kyle, Blair and many others are in far too deep with the tech giants. They need to take a step back and protect our creative talents.

Crass response. Whatever happened to the centre left government elected in July last year? Now obsessed with Reform swing voters, and trying to please the Sun and Times (it won't work).

"What is that man for?" A quote from an AJP Taylor essay, of a child pointing at a Tory politician- FE Smith I think. What does Starmer stand for?

And the same crass taste in gold bathrooms etc. Materialism and autocracy, that's all that they want.

‘The thing about first past the post is it keeps the extremists out - until it really doesn’t… this isn’t a sustainable situation’ says @robfordmancs.bsky.social at Fair Elections APPG
