The most rewarding part of being an academic, seeing young colleagues graduating. What a privilege to have been part of their formative years. I wish all my students all the best. @unistrathclyde.bsky.social

Kennedy provides a bunch of references for his claim that thimerosal in vaccines (barely used anymore) is harmful. If a high-school student submitted this as their reference list, they would fail. I will do what Kennedy didn’t - actually look at them. 🧵

Two pertinent graphs from me tonight... First, U.S. support for bombing Iran is very low — much lower than support was at the time for the American military attacking Afghanistan, Iraq, and ISIS. Link: www.gelliottmorris.com/p/polls-amer...

Quite shocking to see the impacts of Phytophthora ramorum on the Lake District’s Larch trees. As there is no cure, and it is nearly impossible to remove once it takes hold, the the only thing we can do is to try to slow the spread of the disease by felling the infected trees and those around them.

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

A reminder that the registration and abstract submission for the @bspp.bsky.social #PPATH2025 special session on Artificial Intelligence Revolution in Plant Health is still open. We are still looking for quality talks on AI, ML and modelling #plantscience #botany www.bspp.org.uk/conference-i...

An explosive surge of mpox infections in Sierra Leone has pummelled its health-care system, raising fears it will spark a larger outbreak in densely populated West Africa. “The situation is so dire,” says Jia Kangbai, a researcher in Sierra Leone. "Clearly conveying risks can help: The 1-in-500 death rate from measles far outweighs the extraordinarily rare serious vaccine side effects. That may sound obvious, but it’s often missing from public discussion." theconversation.com/game-theory-...

unherd.com/newsroom/sho... I always enjoy reading @unherd.com articles, even if I sometimes (occasionally strongly) disagree with what they say. Despite the title, there is a lot more there, including analysis of political and economic situation in the US.

1. With a new wave of Covid-19 incoming, and remembering my recent comments on the sustainability of risk mitigation, my current protocols are: Vaccination every six months. Masking in all shared indoor public spaces. No masking outside.

So sorry to hear that. Love and take care.

Since I already was in #Poland I took the opportunity to vote in presidential election

I am seeing so much academic writing that is clearly done via ChatGPT. Mismatches between theories and research questions, citations not backing the claim made in the sentence, and shallow writing that shows poor grasp of a topic. This is awful, especially for early-career researchers #AcademicSky

RFK Jr's "MAHA" report is filled with references to studies that literally do not exist, or that completely misinterpret the studies' findings. “We did not publish a paper.. on this topic with that co-author group, or with that title,” says one cited researcher. www.notus.org/health-scien...

This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years. from @404media.co www.404media.co/republicans-...

Yesterday, the last of my "old guard" PhD students Jacinta Onwuka, passed her viva with minor corrections. What a great privilege to work with her and my other students at @unistrathclyde.bsky.social - Ewan McTaggart, Matthew Baister, Amani Al-Rubkhil, and Hasan Sevil.

Starmer is a fool. What little political credibility he still had left has now gone up in smoke on the bonfire of US fickleness. Took less than 12H for the alleged US trade deal to start unravelling. He should never have bowed to the bullies - period! www.theguardian.com/us-news/live...

The idea that this is an efficiency, or that they are just gutting woke programs is horseshit. It's a massive disinvestment in science.

A fantastic Bank Holiday day yesterday out in the Highlands.

NEW: An NIH policy coming in the next week will target — and at least temporarily stop — funding outside the US, threatening thousands of projects and collaborations on topics like infectious diseases and cancer. Some NIH staff have already been told to hold all subaward funds for foreign labs.

My comments on #measles, #vaccination, and risks. statisticallyinsignificant.blog/2025/04/30/h...

How likely are you to die from measles? A graph a day: 30th April 2025 The US is at a tipping point for the return of measles and possibly other vaccine-preventable diseases. Other countries might follow if the vaccination levels drop below the herd immunity threshold. Measles and vaccination are…

A new post on my blog - on Tuberculosis: statisticallyinsignificant.blog/2025/04/28/t...

Tuberculosis A graph a day, 28th April 2025 I have recently started reading a new book on Tuberculosis by John Green. TB has been a huge problem for centuries. Even as I was a student in Poland in the 1980s, we had compulsory X-rays every year, checking for possible TB infections. While the 1950s…

FYI measles wipes clean your immune system, such that you’ll get sick constantly with everything you’ve ever previously developed immunity to. I re-upped MMR vax the other week (I was 5yo when I last got one) & it was easy to book with CVS, easy recovery
