John Scalzi expressed embarrassment that the Italian edition of one of his books had AI cover art, and shortly thereafter posted about inserting language about human editors and cover designers into his big contract with Tor. (Disclosure: I used to do freelance copyediting for Tor.) More of this!

It has been in Europe since 19C but only sporadic outbreaks, and became a problem in 1950s. When I grew up in Poland, we were told that it was part of the Cold War, as the US planes spread them over the Baltic according to the propaganda. As children, we were told to collect and kill them.

I don’t know how to fix education. But I got at that moment just how badly we do it, and how much we drain kids of ambition and excitement by grinding them “great” books that mean nothing to them, and never have enough time to explain to them why it’s great and could matter.

Again, @ft.com reporters or whoever else needs to hear this: "Hallucinations" are not the result of "flaws," they are literally inherent in & inextricable from what LLM systems do & are. Whether an "AI" tells you something that matches reality or something that doesn't, *it is working as designed*
