Hmm, well, compels in particular are telegraphed, right? Like the aspect is known to all. The example that was given is kind of a spur of the moment thing.
I do like DBs a lot, but as a gut-feel there's a little bit less emergence on them. Dunno, been a while since I've Forged something.

Corollary: I definitely like games that use nonstandard randomizers too, or use dice as a resource. His Majesty the Worm and Unbound use the nature of cards as objects very well for its gameplay, Kamigakari and Panic at the Dojo hold dice to be spent on using or empowering actions.

4) shiny math rock pretty. I think the physicality of dice is something that can't be understated. Look, I do most of my tabletop play digitally because my friends are not next to me, but many VTTs have done a good job with making virtual dice rolls feel weightier.
