Altuve is currently falling off a cliff and is still 12+ WAR behind Utley. Maybe he rebounds, maybe he doesn’t.
Right now I’d say Altuve looks a lot like Jeff Kent. Great bat sure, but a bad glove. Now add the banging on trash cans.
Utley was simply better, and modern voters notice that.

Amusing to me, as an American who bought beans and tortillas yesterday.

Hell, I’d rather see Mario Mendoza and Buddy Biancalana on the ballot.

Enjoy Chicago. I’m sure you’re drowning in restaurant recommendations, but Bang Bang Pies & Biscuits!
Grid: love using brothers, love Carty was a catcher briefly, love Wily Mo!
Cheers!

I went to the Vet early to watch batting practice whenever Mark McGwire came to Philly. He took pride in putting on a show.
McGwire never hit one as far as Wily Mo Peña. Just stunning power.
And yeah, I used him today.

I would absolutely watch a Lane Kim spinoff show!

And that, Joe, is the kind of insight that makes me a happy subscriber. Seriously though, it’s weird, right?
Last week I was wondering if the Reds had set a strange record. Now I know it’s not a record.

Reds went 0-13-0 at Houston just last weekend.

I always think of Ryan and then Jim Abbott’s 1992: he went 7-15 with a 2.77 era (5th in AL, 143 era+).

This is really cool. Looking forward to seeing the full list.
Curious, not counting Franco’s 2 hits in the 1989 & 1990 All-Star games?

8/9 was off the top of my head, but I love finding new guys.
Icehouse Wilson only appeared as a pinch hitter in a single game, May 31, 1934 at St. Louis Browns P Ivy Andrews. He reached on E-6 by Ollie Bejma. Stranded at third. That was his career.

The Jacksonville Sharks in the WFL also had some of that league’s best attendance. Also the Arena League’s Jacksonville Sharks.
I’ve heard a few people joke that Jacksonville fans will support any football team that isn’t the Jaguars.

I’m normally a Topps guy, but I happily make an exception for Cincinnati Reds!

The Bulls did a pre-season exhibition game at my high school stadium (Satellite Beach, FL) and I was there.
I was a huge Dolphins fan, so my main memory is Bulls GM Larry Csonka running out onto the sidelines. But second place was looking for Rozier, as it was his pro debut.

Concepcion is my all-time favorite player! Such a great defensive SS.
Great lead off hitters: Tim Raines in the shadow of Rickey Henderson.
Great defensive SS: Dave Concepcion in the shadow of Ozzie Smith.

Dammit, I could have sworn it was Poundstone. My sincere apologies to Ellen Degeneres.

I’m just disgusted by this. Manfred is an absolute idiot and craven spineless suck up.
Landis was a dick, but he understood the threat of gambling and treated it accordingly. If Shoeless Joe & the “Hit King” can be *permanently* banned, so can anyone. Don’t f’ing bet on baseball.

In Rob Manfred’s general direction.

Permanent ineligibility isn’t about the dead, it’s a warning to the living. Bet on baseball and you will never be forgiven, even the “Hit King.”
Landis was a dick, but he understood that gambling on the game risks the trust of fans in the outcome of the games. That’s an existential threat to MLB.

Nice read, thank you.
I always use “zombie runner” for the reasons you mention. “Manfred man” is, for me, too cute and obscure at the same time.
Glad to see Joe Sheehan’s “stupid runner” mentioned in the comments. It does get to the heart of the matter.
I loved extra-long games and miss them.

I’m was very happy with Lombardi until I saw your Don Newcombe. Nice!
40+ Doubles is weird. Steve Finley was the first guy I thought of; just weird. Probably would have been better flipping Robinson and Bench.

I’d probably just treat it as a proxy of foreign-born and/or B&W-photo old guys. But, I’d be happier seeing “Undrafted” than “First Round Pick.” :-)
As long as we’re talking new categories, I noticed there are 170 players with 300+ Career SB (and Trea Turner looking to be 171).

Thank you, I’ve wondered what former players thought about Immaculate Grid.
You’ve been on 2 of my grids this week, but I don’t play for rarity, I play for fun & favorites. For example, all 3 Alou brothers in a row was great!
As a fellow Penn grad and Phillies CF, you’re a favorite. Thanks again!

The first mystery I remember reading had that observation as the main clue. It was in an Encyclopedia Brown story for kids. Gateway drug to the Hardy Boys.
