I love how the logo on the spines goes horizontally and vertically, like a sort of Morse code.

What a lovely idea for a list!

I've been dreaming of that Neville Johnson one ever since I moved to a tall-ceiling flat

I don't mind a tote bag, but my main issue with them is that most are such bad quality. And yeah, not necessarily "green". Other than a nice tote, the only merch I ever used is a nice print of a book cover illustration - not the cover, just the illustration. So pretty I framed it on my wall.

Wish there was even a smidge of possibility I could read those in a week.

I just learned they're publishing the next Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, which I'm excited about, despite that cover. Sad to see they stole them from @charcopress.com, but I suppose that's the way it goes.

Your covers are such bangers!

Hard agree, they're gorgeous!

I'm studying English Lit, but most of my literary analysis goes in a feminist direction, so I thought I shall take advantage of the summer holiday and go to the source. And yes, they're considered classics now 🙂

Ha, yes! I needed something that wouldn't make me wary of what might appear at the foot of the bed at night.

I've only read my first from her this year, so we could have a late party together 🧡 After loving Things We Lost in the Fire I was very tempted to binge through Dangers of Smoking as well, but decided it'd be better to give it a bit of space. Great to see you've enjoyed it!

This is lovely! I record all my reads on goodreads, but I also have several notebooks where I also record new books, yearly favourites and other notes. Most of them are still at my parents, but it's always lovely to stumble upon them, they store whole life periods in them 🧡

Yes, I can see that! I'm only 20ish pages in, and so far it feels amazing how vivid it is and how much she manages to pack in such a short amount of pages. I read in the intro that this was her first novel that really took off, but she was already well into her 70s when this happened, such a shame.

As someone outside publishing, I wasn't even aware there are fees for being shortlisted/longlisted! That sounds counterintuitive.

oh my, same! 🧡🥲

They say 'a subscription to a powerful AI assistant is advantageous' in interpreting the data from Alexa. I just hope they don't mean to say they were worried about what Alexa knew anout them, so the first thing they did was to shove all that data into a different AI engine.

That's a good point, I've a lot of short books that I keep postponing because it would be nice to read them in one sitting, yet I never find the time for that one sitting...

That's such a pretty edition! I haven't read it either, despite the fact that it's so short and I've had it on me shelf for two years I think. Don't know what's wrong with me (well I do know, it's an overflowing TBR)

I've been meaning to read The Tartar Steppe for ages! Your review brought it again higher on my wishlist - as new titles tend to pile up on top of the old.

I've yet to read any of the shortlist (or longlist for that matter), but this one happens to be the only one I do own. I'm also interested in There's a Monster Behind the Door - interesting how big a gap there is between their scores.

I once read a book in which a character named Alexandra, whose physical description I also matched, was killed in the first page. It was disconcerting.

Oh the Shelter bookshop in Stockbridge might be my favourite of all 🧡 The St. Columba's in Brandon Terrace (nice walk by the river from Stockbridge) is also very good, books-only, and reasonably priced. And Morningside in general is another good spot. (I could recommend charity shops all day)

The Cancer Research in Leith has all paperbacks for 50p, same with the Sally Ann donation center. It's true they don't have the best selection, but it's worth browsing if your're in the area, I found quite a few gems there!
