Comic books need to embrace more genres to survive. Serving a shrinking audience of people who will buy your book as "in addition to a Spider Man comic" is one of those things that won't exactly result in a hit. This is part of why manga wins. Multiple voices, genres, character types.

Kids would read more American comics if they were encouraged to crumple, tear, throw them in backpacks and generally beat the hell out of them. Big advantage of manga and scholastic ogns is that they’re sturdy and no adult is telling you to delicately put them in a plastic sleeve in a cool dark box.
