My kids have French passports; can work, live, travel, study in the EU and are doing so. They are freer than most other Brits. Freedom for all should be an objective of government not a red-line.

We despise immigrants for not putting down roots, even as we make sure that it is impossible for them to do so. We do this because we have no idea what we want. open.substack.com/pub/iandunt/...

Have to say, this is a poor take from @davidheniguk.bsky.social. Frankly, if you're bleating about unfairness of a deal that you've asked for and voluntarily entered into, then you need to accept it's down to your own side's negotiators Firstly, officials are duty bound to get the best deal A 🧵

🚨🚨This is an interesting thread by Niall responding to @davidheniguk.bsky.social initial take on the negotiations between the EU and the UK before the summit putting on to stark relief some of the key divisions between the parties in finding a decent path for post-brexit EU-UK relationship. 🧵

Since Brexit, the UK cannot stop the boats anymore. - And a side note on the epic incompetence of the Tories

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

Labour's immigration announcement today is a reflection of the paucity of honest debate by BOTH political parties over the last decade on this issue. Labour has never made a counter-argument, or been honest about economic cost of immigration curbs, so it's stuck making Tory/Reform arguments 1/n

V good thread. Worth your time.

My letter to the Prime Minister. #immigration

1. Brexit does not stand up to scrutiny 2. The more scrutiny is placed on Brexit, the worse it looks 3. Strong majority already think Brexit is going badly 4. Immigration skyrocketed since Brexit 5. Labour can't fight Reform on immigration 6. So why not force Reform to defend Brexit? Winnable!

I need you lads to understand that Europe has an average birth rate of about 1.4 No charismatic politician bothered to tell you how fucked that makes us. But as we get older, we need more care, more GP appointments… Without immigration we will have no pensions very quick.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

Really interesting.

More than 30 years since Bill Hicks died, and he’s still as relevant as ever.

This. If we put my son in for a similar amount of time it would be somewhere over £800/month even with his 'free' hours. In an area so notoriously The Most Deprived Town in Britain that YouTubers make a fortune off it, and some of us voted for Nigel Farage.

Well done @leedseurope.bsky.social on this campaign to have the Council of Europe / EU flag flown on Europe day and signage to recognise the city’s been twinned with Dortmund in Germany for over 50 years - with the relationship reflected in the name of Dortmund Square in Leeds city centre

HAYEK'S BASTARDS I spoke to @quinnslobodian.com about how free market ideas have evolved into the ideological backbone of nationalists and authoritarians around the world... and Liz Truss. Would highly recommend the latest Democracy for Sale democracyforsale.substack.com/p/hayeks-bas...

Europe is creating a "Democracy Shield". EU countries are racing to rearm. The European Commission must confront 3 new realities 1. The US is turning autocratic and hostile JD Vance’s Munich speech shows that Musk’s boosting AfD and other far-right candidates across the EU has official US support

Every single day, it makes more and more sense for Ed Davey and the Liberal Democrats to wheel out a soapbox - perhaps a literal soapbox, since he loves his stunts - and shout: "LET'S REJOIN THE EU". Not the CU. Not the SM. Go the whole hog and be done with it. Millions of people will cheer.

The mainstream media is letting the country down. Badly. If you support Bylines Network as a citizen journalism (ie democratic and pluralistic) alternative... ...then please chip in! We're changing the system. 👇

I’ve heard there is a GIGANTIC free-trade area 19 miles away from the U.K.? 😑 One that also defends its member states’ interests against actual and wannabe-dictators around the globe?

For Americans who didn’t get the joy of living through the Truss/Kwarteng budget, this is the point where the government starts to call the stock market left-wing and/or woke.
