Similarly my MiL. Staunchly Tory, but was (& is) anti-Brexit & not a raving anti-migrant either.

Understood the idea was it would be digital only.
But last time a card was proposed, it was going to be Β£100. With interviews for some people on top.
European IDs are, I gather, pretty cheap.

How is it to work for the homeless, or the very poor, or people who either can't use, or choose not to use the tech?
What will it cost?
I consider myself progressive, but I'm not in favour, for the reasons I've given as well as for those you give.

Am sure I heard somewhere that it's no tax on *cash* tips, which ofc are possibly less common now, when more people pay electronically. Also, who would even declare all cash tips? So it maybe sounds like more than it is.

Also, whatever else, please let them not call it a 'BritCard'! That's just cringey.

....homeless people? Or the very poor?
If they introduce something inexpensive gradually, say by issuing FoC to every 16 year old going forward and take time to put a decent system in place, I would have more sympathy.
But govts love a whizzy project & this could easily be very bad.

I have practical objections such as cost. Blair's all-singing, all-dancing version was going to cost people cΒ£100, iirc, & included trips to have interviews in some instances. Plus the tech was dodgy if you weren't white.
So what about....
