📊NEW ANALYSIS📊 Just 3% of the UK population take 30% of the fights. When this government expands UK airports, this 3% benefit the most. Who are these people? Introducing... the ultra-frequent flyer. Our research with Possible. 1/5

NEW and major report out now about the situation in our universities, which is... not that good. It's clear that morale has collapsed, as predicted. There are of course all sorts of problems with self-report surveys, but this isn't surprising given that the HE topsoil has now been burned off. (1/3)

I lied! No hotel in Paris yet - recommendations for a fabulous (but reasonable!) last night, somewhere around/between Gare de Lyon and Gare du Nord. We'll only have an afternoon and a morning so will prioritise nice neighbourhood and eating options over proximity to the sights.

Every last bit of our interrail trip now booked, with reservations variously booked through German, Belgian and Czech railways and Eurail. 7 towns and cities (and 8 countries including CZ on a sleeper) over 14 days, rough calculation ~3000 miles.

Can you book a CIV ticket *from* a Eurostar to a UK location? Presumably the benefit is that ticket will be accepted on later train if Eurostar is delayed?

With the QM UCU list and at least a couple more I’ve seen we are now north of 100 universities making redundancies. REF 2029 is going to be a shitshow. Like that time they tried to make Champions League qualification based in part on past performance.

More disastrous news from the joke governance of our university system. Research cash per staff member will only be withheld if you make staff compulsorily redundant - thus hugely increasing the incentive to force them out via the constructive dismissal practices that we know are all too common.

Now published! Universities Degraded, by @beccaeharrison.bsky.social & me, reveals the scale of job losses in UK universities, exposes employer practices & shares testimonies of those made redundant & their colleagues. Warning: some of the content is distressing. zenodo.org/records/1563...

Popped into my daughter’s old primary school this morning and so pleased to see the playground full of all sorts of play equipment, a result of engaging with @opal-cic.bsky.social for the last couple of years (sadly after my daughter left). Amazing work!

Tickets are already moving for our second event. We'll be asking @garethdennis.bsky.social about railways and his latest book. Plus readings from local authors and live music. Come to @alphabettitheatre.bsky.social on Friday 4th July. Tickets: www.alphabettitheatre.co.uk/lortburnspec...

Last year we ran a survey on UK HE redundancies. Based on 349 responses, the UNIVERSITIES DEGRADED REPORT uncovers awful conditions, targeting of marginalised groups, & far more cuts than estimated. People's stories matter. We can hold leaders to account. Please share widely tinyurl.com/48nzf7ew

On play and playing out, and the Play Commission - Woman's Hour, at about 47 minutes. Anne Longfield and Debbie Watson discussing the value of playing out and what is needed to enable children to play freely in their neighbourhoods and beyond. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

"But as well as inflicting pain and impoverishing academic offerings, a hard-line approach to staff redundancies may eventually cost them more money than they will save in the short term." Important stuff from my colleague @nickmegoran.bsky.social -

In 2024 the number of vehicle miles driven in Newcastle was 1.1 billion, an increase of 54 million compared to 2023. For the North East Combined Authority area the increase was 165 million to a total of 9.6 billion.

Exactly this. What’s striking across the HE-bonfire-board is the meanness, the triviality, the TINY amounts saved in these cuts. Lives ruined through job loss at worst, fear/burnout/disengagement at best. And for truly trivial savings compared to the cost of one yachted-in management consultant

Eight compulsory redundancies. Just how much do you hate your staff that you go through the trouble of destroying the livelihoods of these colleagues, for just *eight* salaries. What's that, in relation to the entire operating budget of the university? www.uea.ac.uk/about/news/s...

New metro! Only the second time I’ve caught one.

39 lecturers at Liverpool Hope face redundancy. “This will devastate our community, the university’s reputation, and the local economy.” Roberto Catello, branch secretary. #StopTheCuts #UCU www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Congrats to EVERYONE!! 😎 It looks like the ‘3% threshold of peaceful protestors’ showed up for ‘No Kings Day’…👇 11+ MILLION in the streets of America is a danger to Trump, and he knows it. Great. Job. To. The. Real. Patriots. 🇺🇸✨

Seems like everyone in NE29, apart from me, is off to see Sam Fender tonight

So much joy in today’s #kidicalmass Bristol ride, we desperately need more space for kids to cycle safely, but we can have fun while working towards change . @aliceferguson.bsky.social @bristolcycling.bsky.social

This is everywhere. Every academic institution I know is held together by some exhausted woman in her early 40's who waits until the old white male professors have finished their vague rants and says, "alright, so concretely can I propose the following next steps..." She makes half their salary.
