I feel like re-upping this story right now because it went drastically under-reported and under-appreciated when it first came out. This study should be on the tip of every university scholar's tongue to share with their non-academic friends and family: www.npr.org/2025/05/06/n...

Good morning! I enjoy reading and watching. I like reading fantasy and sci-fi because it’s an escape from reality. I’m all over the place with TV/movies. I really enjoyed The Pitt on Max, I watch John Oliver with my husband and Naked and Afraid is my guilty pleasure #bfc530

I didn’t really answer the question but we will be doing a biology themed scavenger hunt in our courtyard and doing a sidewalk chalk final review. I’m also doing a biotech lab with my sophomores and juniors after the seniors leave. They’ll be able to visualize their genes for a trait #bfc530

I still have one more exam to give and there is the final. Our district screwed up graduation dates this year, for the first time seniors are taking finals a week early but 10th and 11th grade take them regular time. All my classes are mixed so I’m double preparing my 10th and 11th graders? #bfc530

This is such a great episode! I’m a huge @schewpsych.bsky.social fan! So much good, immediately actionable stuff for educators.

I just love this video of my youngest son working through language and how best go describe an amazing experience he had. I think he was about 18 months old here. @danwuori.bsky.social

The expectation that we will continue to get through all of our content even as instructional time keeps being chipped away. When I first started in my district instructional time was sacred, somewhere a long the line we lost that. I now have 20 90-min/ yr periods less than when I started. #bfc530

My Dad is 91 and has dementia and my mom is 83 and suffers from anxiety, she takes medicine for it but refuses therapy. It is a challenge. They moved to a community that’s just 3 min. away from me which is a blessing and a burden. It’s tough to balance their care with my own children #bfc530

I think autonomy is important b/c it allows for creativity but too much autonomy is overwhelming for new teachers. I was overwhelmed and it took me about 10 years to actually figure out teaching. I wish I had had more structure as a new teacher, I think I would have improved more quickly #bfc530

We have quite a bit of autonomy but not as much as some districts. We have a district curriculum but other than finals and 2 core assessments we can make our own assessments (this is in the process of changing). I’ve been free to also experiment with pedagogy without interference #bfc530

#bfc530 relevant to yesterday’s question… this is an excellent thread.

The most important idea when it comes to AI & education: WHOEVER DOES THE THINKING GETS THE LEARNING More: ↓

This is my main concern. There is this idea in education that’s been around awhile that you don’t need to know stuff because you can just look it up quick, just skip the learning and get right to the product. Brains just don’t work this way, I think more than ever we need to learn facts #bfc530

Good morning! State testing week for us, I’m proctoring this morning 🙄. AI hasn’t impacted much of what I do, summative written work is primarily done handwritten in class. For the few lab reports I assign they are inquiry and formatting is my own so AI might be more trouble than it’s worth #bfc530

I made a similar point here. The history of eugenics is a lesson in how spotting pseudoscience can be more challenging that we think (and that our best defence is DEI) jonathanrob1985.substack.com/p/genetics-o...

www.nytimes.com/2025/05/10/u... This article only scratches the surface it really only addresses reading but math scores are in the trash too. Education is mired in mythology, inquiry killed reading, math and science instruction yet it drives so much of what is done in classrooms in the US.

Good leaders build culture, identify strengths in their people and capitalize on them, keep a professional distance but still shows compassion, deal directly with problems. These are all things that the leaders in our district have NOT been doing. Looking for some good ones… 👀 #bfc530

The district sent out a video of several students spotlighting a favorite teacher (I was one of them so that was nice). I don’t like this kind of thing because we have thousands of teachers in the district, they only highlighted 6 or so. At our building, admin said thanks, that’s it. #bfc530

Hey #bfc530 (Dennis, I hope I’m not stealing a question from this week) what did your school do for teacher appreciation week? We just found out at our faculty meeting that there is nothing planned for us. 😳 Morale is low…

Avoidance is my primary mode when it comes to negative Nelly’s. I hate drama and people know it so they typically don’t approach me with it. #bfc530

The Phillies are probably the team I follow the most. I’d rather participate in sports than watch (unless my own kids are playing). My other exception is the Olympics which is an obsession with my husband and me. We went this past summer for the trip of a lifetime.

I cannot and will never be able to look out at the sea of young faces in a classroom and think, "I should get a chatbot to build something for them to do."

There is not a lot that my family of four can agree to watch on a Friday night all together especially with 14 yo and 11 yo sons. When you say, “Does anyone want to watch Love on the Spectrum?” And everyone shouts “yes!” You know it’s a special show.

Springtime in my yard.

I rolled out applications for a new peer-to-peer mentoring program I’ve developed. It was my goal to get everything ready by the end of April and I made it happen! Now I just need to get kids to sign up. #bfc530

"In essence, self-efficacy involves intentionally providing students with evidence of early success to help them build the belief that they can be successful in the future." @mrrablin.bsky.social via @edutopia.org www.edutopia.org/article/boos...

I have a river rock with Mrs. Stone written on it with sparkly puff paint. I got it from a player/student my second year of teaching and coaching (also the year I got married) I think it says, A, I’m a sucker for a student gift, especially hand made and B, I like a well placed pun #bfc530

Always the students. When a funny moment happens in class or when they say something that makes me laugh. When they struggle and then succeed, getting to watch them grow into themselves. The students are the joy #bfc530

We have a 2 hour delay schedule for 6 days in the fall and in the spring because we are in block scheduling. We lose 24 hours of instructional time a year to testing and it’s only a portion (1/6 at most) of our building at any given time #bfc530

Good morning #bfc530 The #APBiology exam is May 5th so this week is the…
